We love work-studys!

Filed under: Adventures in IT — jason @ 8:05 am

We often keep one of our work-study students around during the summer to have an extra pair of hands for various jobs.  Last summer, our faithful work-study installed a 1GB stick of memory into a bunch of our older lab computers that only had 512MB.

Fast forward to holiday break and we were looking at our inventory for one reason or another.  We noticed that many of the lab machines still reported as having 512MB of memory.  Upon checking on a few of them, we discovered that our work-study had put the memory stick in the slot but did not push it down all the way to click it into place.  I’m surprised that we didn’t have machines behaving strangely or having some issues with a memory DIMM halfway touching the contacts.

There’s nothing like an afternoon of re-seating memory sticks!

  1. At least they tried to install them. I have seen them given to summer help and they have “left the building” Of course that was back in the day that a 32 meg stick was “big”.

One piece of advice. When you give them something to do, make them a check sheet. Include every mundane, minute detail that you would think Lindsay would be able to do. Have them check it off for every machine that they are to work on. In this case, have them boot the machine and record the total amount of RAM after installation of the new. I don’t know how many times I have had to go back and clean up stuff that our kids, including some that we have hired full time, had done. A check list helps with that.
